Program Description

The doctoral program in Biological Sciences focuses on learning a set of knowledge, competencies, and skills necessary to become successful researchers and teachers. This task is complex and requires the ability to formulate essential questions and design and develop the experiments and analyses necessary to answer them.

We study the origin, maintenance, and evolution of biological systems and their relationship with the environment. Our study models range from individuals to communities in terrestrial and aquatic environments. We use theoretical, field, experimental and statistical approaches to address questions about the behavior of different systems.

The multiple research areas offer different biological models, levels of organization, and modes of approach. Therefore, there is also an essential integration among the research areas of our major. At the same time, the interaction between basic and applied research is encouraged to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable management, facing the challenges that arise from the relationship between human activity and ecosystems in the context of global change.

Accreditation

Program accredited by CNA-Chile for seven years.

Program Objectives

The main objective of the doctoral program in Biological Sciences is to provide an intensive education oriented to scientific research in biology. Our doctoral program offers students the possibility of developing research in diverse areas of knowledge, from those related to gene regulation and expression to the functioning of the aridest ecosystems on the planet, through interaction with the academics of the Faculty.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates in biological sciences can respond to the demands of today’s society; a competency profile and a learning-centered curriculum is an opportunity for doctoral students to achieve autonomy and excellence as current and future researchers.
