Doctoral Program in Literature

The Doctoral Program in Literature was established in 2002 with the aim of training high-level researchers in the field of literary studies. It is accredited by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA) for seven years, through 2031.

The program has a duration of eight semesters, including the doctoral dissertation, which is completed under the supervision of a faculty member from the program and the guidance of additional academics (one internal and one or more external advisors). Students may apply for two additional Residence semesters, exempt from tuition fees, in order to complete their doctoral dissertation.

Applicants are required to submit an outline of their proposed doctoral dissertation. Those admitted who hold a Master’s degree in Literature may apply for recognition of prior studies.

Program Objectives

General Objective

To educate researchers of the highest academic standard who are capable of independently reflecting on diverse literary issues arising from Chilean and Latin American cultural heterogeneity, in dialogue with local and international scholarship in the field of literary studies.” (Article 2, Program Regulations)

Specific Objectives

• To train researchers capable of identifying and defining literary issues arising from cultural, gender, ethnic, popular, and elite diversities, among others, through the production of knowledge that makes visible and/or challenges the symbolic forms of their representation.
• To provide doctoral students with an academic environment that values the heterogeneity of Chilean and Latin American cultures and promotes their participation in national and international, disciplinary and interdisciplinary research networks, enabling them to engage with diverse cultural perspectives.
• To strengthen the field of literary studies by encouraging doctoral students to participate in formal research projects, supporting publications in indexed academic journals, promoting doctoral student-led academic activities related to their dissertation topics, and fostering collaboration with other doctoral programs to broaden dialogue within the humanities.

Admission Profile

The PhD in Literature is primarily intended for:

1. Holders of Master’s or Bachelor’s degrees in Literature and related disciplines within the humanities (History, Sociology, Philosophy, Arts).
2. Language and Literature teachers involved in research projects.
3. Literary critics.
4. Professionals working in the literary and cultural sectors.

The admission process for the PhD in Literature, accredited by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA) through 2031, consists of two stages.

1. Submission of Application Documents

All application documents (except letters of recommendation) must be submitted by the applicant in PDF format, compressed into a single ZIP file, through the PhD in Literature application form.

2. Personal Interview

Date: To be determined.

Applicants who meet the admission requirements will be invited to a personal interview with the PhD in Literature Committee. If public health conditions permit, interviews will be conducted in person. Otherwise, they will be held remotely.

Applicants residing outside the Metropolitan Region may complete the interview via Zoom.

Admission Results

Applicants will be notified of the admission results confidentially by email within 15 days following the interviews.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the PhD in Literature Program demonstrate advanced expertise in the strategies required to define, delimit, and analyze a corpus relevant to literary issues arising from Chilean and Latin American cultural heterogeneity, in dialogue with artistic traditions and the literary and cultural theories relevant to the advancement of the discipline.

Graduates of the program will be prepared to:

• Conduct and lead disciplinary and interdisciplinary research aimed at making visible, rearticulating, and/or critically examining issues related to cultural, gender, and ethnic diversity, as well as popular and elite subjectivities, generating scholarly impact through journal articles, books, and academic seminars.
• Participate in higher education activities, demonstrating an advanced level of specialization in literary studies.
