Program Description

The Doctoral Program in Psychotherapy is a program developed jointly by the School of Psychology and the Department of Psychiatry of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Department of Psychology and the Departments of Psychiatry and Mental Health the Universidad de Chile. It is built on the interdisciplinary research work conducted by an international network of psychotherapy researchers, bringing together specialists in psychotherapeutic research, psychology, psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, and neuroscience.

  • Seven years up to 9 November 2030.

Program Objectives

The general objective of the program is to provide its students with a postgraduate education of excellence that will prepare them for high-level academic practice with a specialized focus on research in psychotherapy and mental health.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program are expected to contribute to the body of knowledge in Mental Health and Psychotherapy and the training of academics and professionals. They are also likely to promote the advancement of this subject area, both in research and in the clinical field, to contribute to human development and well-being in general and the study and solution of specific problems in particular.

Application Requirements

  1. Applicants must hold, at least, a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Medicine, or an equivalent or higher degree in these disciplines.
  2. Applicants must have completed basic classes in the areas of Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry, Statistics, and Research Methodology.
  3. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English.
  4. Applicants must pass the entry examination, which consists in the evaluation of the applicant’s qualifications, an essay on their academic purposes, a personal interview, and an assessment of their scientific skills.

  • To have approved the study plan according to the article 19 of the bylaws on obtaining a degree by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
  • Have approved the oral defense of the doctoral thesis.
  • Have the status of graduate of the program.
  • Have had a minimum stay of four semesters in the program, or two semesters in the case of external students undergoing co-tutoring.
  • Have accredited advanced command of the English language with application in academic fields, equivalent to the upper score of level B2 (Independent User) according to the Common European Framework of reference for languages ​​and in accordance with the operationalization protocol established by the Directorate of Doctorate of the Vice-rectory for Research, or, by presenting an international certification equivalent to that defined by the aforementioned Directorate for validation.
  • Be the lead author on at least one scientific article accepted for publication in a mainstream journal or book.
  • Have approved at least three transversal skills workshops (CPD acronyms), at least one of them being of an ethical nature, and
  • Have carried out a research stay / internship abroad, with teams that work on topics related to their thesis.

In addition to the academic requirements mentioned above, at the time of opting for the degree of Doctor of Psychotherapy, the student may not be registered as a debtor of any kind with the university, he must have formally delivered the corresponding copies of the final document of the doctoral thesis, including the modifications requested by the doctoral thesis committee and having deposited it in the UC Repository in accordance with the instructions established by the UC Library System (SIBUC).
